Why We Love The Jesus Storybook Bible

I want to tell you about a book I love. A friend posted something from it on Instagram recently and I thought, “Oh, yeah, I haven’t told my people about that book yet!” So let me take today to tell you about the Jesus Storybook Bible.

the Jesus Storybook Bible

Written by Sally Lloyd-Jones and illustrated by Jago, this book is a gem.  Our copy was a gift from my parents when we had our son dedicated at church.

What I love most about it: That “Every story whispers his name.” In every chapter, Lloyd-Jones ties the story to Jesus.  She makes it so clear that every part of the Bible is connected to the great rescue plan of Jesus and His Father.

Nolan likes that there are a few pages that are flipped sideways, so you have to turn the book, and he gets this funny grin on his face every time there is a description of God’s love – “God’s Never Stopping, Never Giving Up, Unbreaking, Always and Forever Love.”

How We Use It

I try and read this to my son daily; it happens at least a few times a week.  (It’s one of our ‘morning things’.)  And I’m sure we will keep going through it until it falls right apart.  The book is geared for children, and so has some embellishments.  Like Daniel, after his night in the lion’s den, is found sitting with a lion’s head on his lap, purring like a little kitten.  And as my husband points out, they left out the end – remember that the king threw Daniel’s accusers in to the lions instead?

So I’m not recommending you replace your regular reading of Scripture with this, but WOW.  I have so often been moved to tears by the beauty and the ‘aha moments’ in this book.  For example, at the end of the story when Abraham was being asked to sacrifice his son Isaac… “Many years later, another Son would climb another hill, carrying wood on his back.  Like Isaac, he would trust his Father and do what his Father asked.  He wouldn’t struggle or run away.”  So many fresh reminders of what Jesus did for us and why.

If you have kids, get this book!  Read it to them.  But honestly, buy it even if you don’t have kids at home!
